ABOUT DEE
Dee Solin’s half-century-long abstract practice positions color and form as a rigorous, non-verbal language. Decades of single-minded studio experimentation culminate in her new body of work, Ecstatic Gravity, which will debut at Context Art Miami during Art Basel Week 2026. In this phenomenological collection, Solin strips form and color down to their absolute essentials. By leveraging a disciplined minimalist aesthetic, she generates high-octane visual experiences that hum with optical resonance and construct deep psychological landscapes.
At its core, Ecstatic Gravity argues for the urgent reclamation of Minimalist thought. Solin traces her artistic lineage back to the radical early abstractions of Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square (1915). Her practice is built on the structural color theories of Bauhaus masters Josef Albers and Johannes Itten, infused with the avant-garde spirit of Black Mountain College. Most recently, this new work aligns with the formal clarity of Ellsworth Kelly, the gravity-defying exuberance of Adolph Gottlieb, and the meticulous balancing acts of Alexander Calder.
Solin’s deep commitment to her craft is anchored by a rich academic and exhibition history. She earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1976 and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2017. A regular presence in the art world, she recently exhibited at Red Dot Miami during Art Basel Week, where she won the award for Best New Exhibitor. Her paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions with prominent New York City galleries since the early 2000s, including the Andre Zarre Gallery (Chelsea), Sideshow Gallery (Williamsburg), and the Flatiron and Phyllis H. Mason Galleries (Manhattan).
Today, Solin's work is held in private collections across the United States and Europe. She divides her time between New York and Florida, working primarily out of her studio in the Hudson River Valley.
